Reverse engineering – the measure of all things

Avoid redesigns by restoring missing CAD data – with reverse engineering, also known as Area return called. Restoration using various measuring methods is much faster, more effective and significantly cheaper than a new design. Even an older spare part or a damaged component can be revived using reverse engineering data technology without having to completely redesign it.

The image of reality

A CAD model is not available. Instead, the high-resolution 3D scan is used to create an absolutely detailed, three-dimensional image of the component – in this example, the cube. This means that all the information recorded about the component is available. Thanks to reverse engineering.

Option 1: The form in the original version

In this case, the customer wants a CAD model that exactly reproduces the original: We place a kind of spider’s web over the 3D scan to represent the actual state of the scanned cube. The data is not parameterized. The basis of the CAD model is therefore the original cube, but deliberately not an ideal cube.

In this case, the customer wants an ideal CAD model: we therefore examine the 3D scan and evaluate it. To do this, we inspect the individual parameters such as curves, angles, parallelism and hole position. We then parameterize the 3D scan of the original cube. This ultimately produces the new CAD model in idealized form.

Reverse engineering – the second spring

The procedure of analyzing a product (e.g. a competitor’s product) in order to gain insights for its further development originates from mechanical engineering.

Real handmade objects are measured using various methods (tactile measurements, 3D scanning, computer tomography, other optical measurement methods, ultrasound measurement).

A CAD model is created on the basis of this measurement. Reverse engineering is also used in software development. There it means either decompiling the executable machine code or analyzing it directly.

Motivations for reverse engineering are, for example, the analysis of competitive advantages or the modeling of differentiation opportunities. The objectives can vary. Reverse engineering can uncover sources of error or carry out quality checks.

Production steps can also be traced. Existing products can also be further developed as a result. Reverse engineering therefore plays a particularly important role in quality and/or configuration management.

How reverse engineering works

Reverse engineering involves creating new CAD data for components and tools for which CAD data is no longer available. For example, an older spare part or a damaged component can be revived using reverse engineering data without having to completely redesign it.

A tool that is currently going into series production can also be recorded and digitized so that an identical new tool can be manufactured exactly according to the image after its production cycle. If documentation is no longer available, reverse engineering is therefore a cheaper and faster alternative to redesigning.

Production steps can also be traced. Existing products can also be further developed as a result. Reverse engineering therefore plays a particularly important role in quality and/or configuration management.
