What data is obtained with industrial computed tomography?

After the scan has been performed by the computer tomograph, you receive the geometric information of the component either as volume data (e.g. RAW files) or as triangulated surfaces (e.g. STL files). These are used in many Computerized Numerical Control machines (CNC machines for short), 3D printers and other systems.

In order to carry out very precise measurements of components using computer tomography, the surfaces are generated from the volume data. All edges of the components, including those on the inside, are recorded in full. For this reason, the process is not only suitable for creating initial sample inspection reports, but also for visualizing geometric deviations when correcting tools.

Analytical evaluation of the measurement results

In addition to purely metrological evaluation, the extremely high-resolution volume data from computed tomography can also be used to easily analyze many other component parameters. This includes, among other things analysis of cavities (so-called blowholes) or cracks.

However, there are also other areas of application. These include, above all, the analysis of various assemblies. Here, for example, the seals are checked for possible damage and correct seating. Finally, there is also the possibility of analyzing transport phenomena or carrying out structural mechanics simulations for the industrial and scientific sectors.
